Throwing away a career with bad choices is not something new in Hollywood. There are more stories of riches to rags, than the other way around. Nicolas Cage is one of those actors whose career has been on a downward spiral for a while now. But in 2021, the Oscar winner is garnering award contention talk with his new movie Pig as well as some John Wick comparisons.

Nicolas Cage has had a long career in Hollywood. Starting out with a career maker such as Leaving Las Vegas in the 90s, the actor was destined to become one of the greats. At one time he was even in talks to play the iconic DC character Superman. But flop after flop resulted in the actor only appearing in C-grade direct to DVD movies.

In this year alone the actor appeared in the horrible film called Jiu Jitsu. But every once in a while, the actor pulls out a gem from out of nowhere that takes the film world by surprise. This year, to everyone’s wonder, Nicolas Cage is coming with a film called Pig and it is receiving wide spread critical acclaim. Some fans are even pointing out some John Wick comparisons to which the National Treasure star has some pointed things to say.

Pig is the new Nicolas Cage movie about a reclusive farmer who goes on search for his truffle hunting pig after someone kidnaps the animal. It is such an easy premise and the trailers play to the obvious Nicolas Cage-pig friendship, but according to the critics the film is much more than that. But simply looking at the synopsis and trailer, fans are drawing John Wick comparisons.

John Wick was released in 2014, starring Keanu Reeves in the titular role. The movie followed a retired widowed hitman whose last gift from his wife, a little dog, gets murdered during a home invasion. John Wick comes out of retirement and goes on a killing rampage to find the culprits and anyone associated with the crime.

So, on the surface level, there are obvious comparisons that can be drawn between the two movies. A loved animal, reclusive owner, and infringing criminals, but the similarities end there. Nicolas Cage insists the movie is not a studio affair and his film could not be further from John Wick. The actor also talked about the nature of independent vs. studio filmmaking during his talk with The Hollywood Reporter.

The Face/Off actor said about the John Wick comparison, “I couldn’t think of a movie further from John Wick than Pig. I don’t know that I will ever go back to those Jerry Bruckheimer-type spectacles because I do think there’s a cult of fear in the studio system that’s a little stifling. I don’t feel that when I’m making an independent movie.”

Beyond the surface level similarities, there are professional comparisons that can be drawn between the stars of the two movies. Keanu Reeves was also in a never-ending cycle of dismal movies, then John Wick came along and resurrected his career. That can also be true for Nicolas Cage who has some cult-classic movies to his name.

Face/Off, National Treasure, Ghost Rider, Lord of War, Con Air, The Rock, Gone in 60 Seconds, these movies are still watched to this day. Then there are the critical darlings Leaving Las Vegas, Adaptation, and more recently Joe. Whether it is his weird and lavish lifestyle or whacky selection of movies and characters to play, Nicolas Cage has a certain place in fans’ hearts.

Now, his film may be compared to John Wick but that does not diminish the value of Cage as a performer. People want to see the actor succeed and maybe the outpouring of love and support for Pig will spur him on to make better movies.
