After a relatively silent 2020 (only voice work for Pixar’s Onward) Chris Pratt is coming into 2021 hot with one action movie set for release while working on the filming of another TV show. The Tomorrow War and The Terminal List are both Amazon Prime Video projects with the movie set for release in summer of this year while production on the latter is still going on.

The Tomorrow War tells the story of the current world where travelers from the near future time travel back to warn the humans about a deadly war with Aliens. Thirty year into the future it seems humans have discovered Aliens and they have come to exterminate the people of Earth. Now the time travelers are looking soldiers and able bodied smart people to travel into the future so they can assist in the war effort.

While military theme is present in another Chris Pratt production with the Amazon Studios, The Terminal List is not taking the sci-fi route. It is a story of a former Navy Seal, James Reece, who returns home after loosing his friends in a deadly ambush. But which his loved ones at home are killed, a deep conspiracy of the US government is revealed, causing James Reece to go after the people who conspired to take everything from him.

The Tomorrow War is a film which was acquired by Amazon Prime Video in 2021 after multiple scrapped release date for a wide release. The film was scheduled for a wide release by Paramount Pictures during the Christmas period of 2020. But we all know what happened as most films were pulled from theaters as the COVID pandemic worsened.

While the filming for the film was done by January 2020, the post-production time was the reason for the long delay in release. After Paramount moved the release to summer of 2021, they sold the film to Amazon Studio and it was announced later the film will be a Prime Video release. This was probably not a big deal for Chris Pratt as he had formed a relationship with the production arm of Amazon.

Based on original work of writer Zach Dean, the film will be the live-action directorial debut Chris McKay with Pratt serving as executive producers. The story is described as, “The fate of a futuristic war rests upon one man’s abilities to confront the ghosts of his past. Humanity is losing to an alien invasion, so to fight back, scientists develop a way to draft soldiers from the past to fight the war.”

The Terminal List is currently in production and is based on the bestseller James Reece books series by Jack Carr. The Terminal List was the first book in the series and was a chart topper as soon as it was released. In total there are four books in the series, the fourth one releasing in 2021 and Joe Rogan called it a “f-cking riveting” thriller.

The show will follow, “James Reece after his entire platoon of Navy SEALs is ambushed in a covert mission. Reece returns home to his family with conflicting memories of the event and questions about his culpability. As new evidence comes to light, Reece discovers dark forces working against him, endangering not only his life but the lives of those he loves.”

Directed by Antoine Fuqua (he and Chris previously worked in The Magnificent Seven) Chris Pratt is starring as James Reece. The series will feature real life Navy SEAL operators and some are behind the scene advising on the realism of the show. This is not the first time Chris has played a Navy SEAL however, he appear in acclaimed Katherine Bigelow film Zero Dark Thirty as one of SEAL’s involved in the raid of Bin Laden’s compound.

Chris Pratt championed the books by Carr and he was driving force behind the show, starting the initial development in April 2020 and shopping it around for a production home. Amazon came on board in May 2020 and the casting process was started soon after. Chris will appear in the show alongside his brother-in-law Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Regarding the show and the people involved in the making of it, Chris shared a post on Instgram that read, “It has been my great honor to work alongside the men in this photo. Many of whom are actual Navy Seals. As far as men go, it is my opinion there are none equal to the SEAL. I’m trying my hardest to portray James Reece in a believable way. With enough smoke and mirrors and technical advice from the men who’ve lived it, we’ll fake it just enough to tell the incredible story.”

Amazon Prime Video has slated The Tomorrow War for 2 July 2021 release worldwide on the streaming platform. There is still no release date for The Terminal List, however, as the show is still in production.
