Sam Neill has been part of some of the biggest box office hits of the past three decades. From setting records with Jurassic Park to making hilarious cameos in Marvel movies, the actor is a veteran in the movie industry. But despite being in the film making business for decades he still cannot figure out Thor: Love and Thunder, including the Thor franchise and the Marvel Universe.
The Marvel Universe aka MCU is growing with each passing year. It is not just Iron-Man and his womanizing antics anymore; it is so much larger than that. So, for someone to just come in the middle and try to understand how it all works, the experience can be head spinning. There is no way a new fan who has only seen Endgame can understand the weight of “Avengers, assemble” uttered by Captain America at the end of the record shattering movie.
Like the comics, MCU is a world on itself and Sam Neill is getting a taste of not being in on the secret. The renowned actor who was part of the hilarious Asgard theatre scene says even after being part of Thor: Ragnarok and returning for Thor: Love and Thunder, he is still not clear about the Marvel Universe or the Thor movies.
Sam Neill does Not Understand the MCU or Thor: Love and Thunder Despite Appearing in the Movie
It was a surprise seeing Sam Neill in Thor: Ragnarok. He was playing an actor portraying Odin in a theatre performance held in Asgard by Loki pretending to be Odin. If that sentence did not make sense, then you are in the same boat with Sam in not having a clue about the Marvel Universe.
Well, we saw at the end of Thor: The Dark World, Loki impersonating Odin and sitting on the Asgardian throne. The story of Thor: Ragnarok continues a few years after that with Loki still ruling as Asgard as Odin while celebrating Loki as a hero who save the 9 realms. Then he started a play with actor’s showing his “heroics” in the absence of both Thor and Odin.
In the theatre play held for the people of Asgard, Matt Damon played actor Loki, Luke Hemsworth played actor Thor, and Sam Neill played actor Odin. They are all making a return in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder in another possible hilarious scene. But despite having two Marvel movies under his belt, Sam Neill, though happy to be a part, does not know what he is doing in the MCU, the actor mentioned during an interview with Nova FM.
The Jurassic Park actor said, "I've never understood any of the Thor films, in fact the whole Marvel universe is a complete mystery to me. I mean I was standing beside Jenny Morris (on the set of Thor: Ragnarok) and I said, 'Do you know what planet we're on?' To be honest I was completely baffled, I came back I was baffled again, I did my bit, I don’t know who are playing who exactly because they are sort of swapping roles."
Sam Neill appears to be teasing fans with the whole swap comments but they are appearing in the movie which is a welcome distraction. Sam was previously pictured with Jeff Goldblum in Australia and there were reports both met up during the filming of Thor: Love and Thunder. Jeff stole the show in the third Thor movie and his character was left in a lurch near the end of the movie, so it will be interesting how he and his posse return to the franchise.
Recently Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi showed off a budget poster for Thor: Love and Thunder. It was a funny photo and we are expecting more information to arrive in the coming days. The film is set for 6 May 2022 release with a wide array of cameo actors that includes Russell Crowe, Melissa McCarthy, her husband Ben Falcone and an expanded role for Guardians of the Galaxy and Christian Bale playing the main villain.
