'Luther' Film is Officially Happening Says Idris Elba

Idris Elba admits the Luther film is a long time coming.

You may find this hard to believe, but there were once preparations for an American adaptation of Luther with the drastically different trio of Marlon Wayans, Rosario Dawson, and Mahershala Ali, leading the way as potential candidates for the starring role.

Fortunately, it never happened because the original show remains one of the best small-screen crime shows of the 21st century, and arguably the most iconic role of Idris Elba‘s acting career.

The beloved BBC mega-hit may have spanned just 20 episodes over the course of five seasons, but the tenacious detective instantly turned into an emblem of modern procedural drama.

Elba ended up scooping a Golden Globe for Best Actor in Miniseries or TV film for season 2, and the fifth and final edition was the only occasion he did not get nominated for his remarkable performance in the same category.

Luther couldn’t have been done better on TV, but the plan for a motion picture was always in place from the get-go. Last summer Elba announced there was still a good possibility of it happening, feelings which were shared by the creator Neil Cross soon after.

And now, speaking in a recent interview, the lead star affirmed his intention to carry the gritty world of the show to the theaters, stating that the film is currently under production.

I’m super excited and hope the fans are sort of excited for that. It’s been a long time coming for a movie, so I’m excited about that.

Of course, the more we hear all the major talents just repeating what was already said without any forward progress being made, the less likely a Luther film would genuinely happen.

We can’t deny that the COVID-19 pandemic may have had a major effect on the development process, but with an already established fan-following hungry for more adventure, not to mention the excitement of both the actor and the showrunner to make it happen, the official sanction can’t be that far away.
