There are few film franchises in cinema history that have similar name recognition and fanfare around the globe like Harry Potter. The wizarding world and its 8 movies made Daniel Radcliffe and his other two co-stars into beloved celebrities. But the franchise also has had a "liberating" effect on Daniel's career after Harry Potter ended.
When we speak of Daniel Radcliffe, the image that comes to mind is of him as Harry Potter. The actor will never be able to shed that name recognition. He has been working in different movies and TV shows but Daniel will always be known as Harry Potter.
You can call it a blessing or a curse, but over the past decade, Daniel has managed to live with the recognition. And over the past few years, he has also been appearing in some really out-there movies. Something the actor attributes to his early exposure to name and fame as a teenager.
Harry Potter Freed Daniel Radcliffe to Take on Weird Movie Roles
Appearing in franchise movies is almost never ideal. There is a genuine fear of being typecast for the rest of the actor's life. Similar roles are what killed most Hollywood actor's careers and that is even more for teenagers who appear in young adult flicks.
The majority of young actors can never get rid of their past roles. It makes them one-dimensional in the casting director's eyes and that was the fear for most of the cast members of Harry Potter. Being part of a billion-dollar franchise, there is an expectation to carry on a similar level of fame and box office numbers.
But that type of expectation was never the driving force for Daniel Radcliffe. He what he wanted to do with his career after Harry Potter and to say his choices have been weird would be a huge understatement. And his choice-making strength all comes from a decade spent making hugely profitable movies.
All the Harry Potter films were massive box office successes and it all happened for Daniel before he was fully into his 20s. The liberation he felt of not having to make a billion-dollar movie was enough to set him on a path that has included movies such as Swiss Army Man and Guns Akimbo.
The actor was talking with Elijah Wood, another fantasy movie star, about fame and expectations when the conversation turned to Daniel's choices in movies. He explained what led to him doing low-budget, really whacky films.
Daniel said, "I've actually found it's an incredibly liberating thing, to do the biggest thing you're ever gonna do really f**king early. The financial success thing, that's done. So just do things that make you happy. And I definitely get a sense of that from your career, Elijah."

Being plucked from a stage in London and place in a hundred million-plus budgeted film is a scary thought. That is exactly what happened to Daniel Radcliffe. He was only 11 years old when he appeared in The Philosopher's Stone and it is not a stretch to say the actor lived his teen years on set.
Daniel and the other cast members were tutored on set after filming was done. They lived in the wizarding world of Hogwarts. So, imagine your teen years being filmed for all to see in perpetuity. There are bound to be some embarrassing moments and Daniel Radcliffe does feel like his earlier acting is not up to the mark.
He said, "I'm intensely embarrassed by some of my acting, obviously. But yeah, it's like asking, 'How do you feel about your teenage years?' There's so much in there that it's almost impossible to single out one feeling. It's hard to separate my relationship with Harry from my relationship with the films as a whole."
It has to be said, for someone who became famous at such a young age, Daniel has managed his fame and all the attention well. He is making movies that make him happy and is not concerned about being relevant. There is no way Harry Potter will be forgotten and Daniel Radcliffe is Harry Potter, no matter what.
