Rupert Grint isn’t Too Excited About Harry Potter Series Coming to HBO Max

For over a decade Harry Potter film series ruled the box office. It started the career of three great actors and created a subgenre for children’s movies that appealed to all ages. Now HBO Max is trying to bring back the world of Harry Potter, this time on the small screen, Rupert Grint for one is not overly excited about it.

Harry Potter is based on the book series of the same name by J.K. Rowling. Her name may not hold much weight these days, but the wizarding world of Harry Potter is deeply soaked into the popular culture of today. Warner Bros. tried to cash in on the interest by making prequel movies.

The films are battling mixed reception with the third movie in the Fantastic Beast saga still a year away. But no matter what Warner Bros. knows the appeal of Harry Potter will never die down which is why they are trying to make a TV series for HBO Max. And among the leading cast members of the original franchise, Rupert Grint expressed his feelings about the possible TV show.

Rupert Grint Thinks Harry Potter Series Would be “Weird”

When original actors of beloved series are asked the question of their franchise being taken over by someone else, most likely than not, you are getting a negative to cautious answer. The actors have a connection with the characters and they are protective of the world they helped create.

Rupert Grint appeared in eight movies and player Ron to the best of his ability. The character made him famous and he identifies with Ron. His formative years were spent playing a single character over a ten-year period so there is definitely going to be an attachment.

While there is not much information in terms of the Harry Potter series on HBO Max. There is speculation the streamer is trying to get a series made but no one knows what the story will be. Warner Bros. has made a prequel movie with the author serving as the screenwriter so a show on HBO Max does not seem like a farfetched idea.

When Rupert heard about the show, he found the idea of a continuation to be a little “weird.” The most likely scenario is the story of the Harry Potter series is a continuation of the main movie series. The problem with that idea is all the actors are grown up and recasting new actors would be a hassle.

We do not see the main cast from the movies coming back for a TV show. Daniel Redcliffe has expressed his desire to be involved with small projects. So, a continuation poses a lot of issues which Rupert is alluding to in his comments. He is interested to see a new group of friends but a continuation, it appears, won’t sit right with the Ron actor.

In a comment Rupert gave to Variety, he said, “It’ll be weird if it was a continuation kind of thing. I weirdly feel quite protective of that character. Even when I saw the stage shows, it was a very strange experience. … If it’s like a different group of friends, I guess it would be interesting.”

Frankly, we are not particularly looking for new Harry Potter shows or movies. The first Fantastic Beast movie was fine but the second one killed all interest for us and a series does not really excite us. There is a market for those movies and shows, Harry Potter fanbase is wide and with each passing year, parents are introducing the wizarding world to their kids.

Harry Potter will never leave popular culture, for better or worse, we all have to live with that fact. Also, if Lord of the Rings can have a TV show on Amazon, Harry Potter getting a fresh look away from the main series would expand the universe further.

We are however interested in the other two lead actors giving their assessment on the whole HBO Max Harry Potter series idea. For now, the show is not confirmed but who are we kidding, it will be confirmed in the coming days.
