After making his directorial debut with a Zombie movie in 2004, Zack Snyder is back with Army of the Dead and this time the zombies are intelligent, also, there is an undead tiger.

Zack Snyder was a Warner Bros. man from the start, all of his past movies were with the studio but after Justice League there was a rift between the two parties. That resulted in Warner Bros. not going ahead with Army of the Dead which was instead picked up by Netflix.

A pitch meeting for potential projects with Netflix resulted in their head of programming latching on to the idea of Army of the Dead. That single pitch meeting resulted in a green light for the movie and now we have a trailer with a release date also made public.

Smart Alpha Zombies and an Undead Tiger – Army of the Dead Trailer Brings Some Heat

It has been a few year since the great zombie war, humans have managed to survive on the backs of some soldiers who were able to cordon off the infestation to small areas. One of the areas with highest concentration of infected zombies was in Las Vegas, the former gambling capital of the world.

Now the war is over, the soldier who fought are gone to their own corner of the world. Without so much as an appreciation for the work they did, the soldiers live their lives in relative poverty. Then in walks two shady figures who convince Scott Ward, a former soldier to go into Las Vegas and steal $200 million from the casino vaults.

While initially reluctant, Scott considers the money to be their severance pay and enlists the help of his former zombie fighting team. Gruff soldiers from days gone by assemble for one last payday and the team heads into the quarantine zone of Las Vegas.

The heist goes as planned but when they come out of the vault, the zombies are all gathered around and they are being controlled. A departure from the hungry-brainless flesh-eating monsters they fought during the initial phase of the war. The zombies appear to have evolved since the initial battle and they are coming after the few soldiers inside Las Vegas, oh and a zombie tiger is coming along too.

The team seems to be confused at first as to how it is all possible, but they get a handle on the situation and soon all hell breaks loose. Still, they need to get out of the town because in 36 hours the government is going to nuke Las Vegas and they won’t be alive to spend all that money they just got out of the vault.

Army of the Dead cast is lead by Dave Bautista as Scott Ward, with Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana De La Reguera, Matthias Schweighöfer, Garret Dillahunt, Tig Notaro, Hiroyuki Sanada, Theo Rossi, Nora Arnezeder, and Raúl Castillo also starring.

This will not be a one-off movie from Netflix, there is a massive plan for a zombie universe headed by Zack Snyder. There is currently a planned prequel movie in the works with Matthias Schweighöfer returning to star and also an animated series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas TV spinoff will probably shed some light on the smart zombies of the city.

We can also count on a sequel coming out way soon if the original movie is a success on Netflix and some of the characters survive the onslaught of smart zombies. The odds are against the team but if we take into consideration what Zack did in his past flesh-eating monster flick, back in 2004, then there is a slim chance the humans will survive for long.

Netflix is premiering Army of the Dead, directed by Zack Snyder, on 21 May 2021.
