Ser Davos and Missandei Romance!? GTFOH – Liam Cunningham wasn’t Having It

Game of Thrones season 8 (sigh) was a mess; most of the fans will agree. There were signs the show was going in the gutter, but the inevitable was fended off in season 7 when Liam Cunningham refused to do a Ser Davos and Missandei romance.

Yes, you heard that right, the one half of the “great” creator of Game of Thrones, David Benioff, wanted Ser Davos Seaworth wanted to lust for Missandei. I cannot even imagine what that could have looked like (yuck).

Ser Davos was the uncle we never had, someone who said exactly what he felt and almost always tried to do the right thing. He also made his way into fans’ hearts for his relationship with Shireen, a fatherly relationship.

Now, imagine Ser Davos pining for a young girl like Missandei and then trying to mentor Lyanna Mormont. The relationship would have been mired in a shadow of creepiness, which we did not need in Game of Thrones. But thank god for Liam Cunningham, who was not having any of the suggestions.

Liam Cunningham Shot Down the Suggestion of Ser Davos and Missandei Romance

The creators of Game of Thrones are known for throwing away people who do not agree with them. Just ask Ser Barristan Selmy and his flimsy end in a back alley instead of the long arc he had in the books.

But Liam Cunningham was not succumbing to the pressures of Benioff and director Mark Mylod. With the start of season 7, Jon Snow and Daenerys came face to face. The show’s creator wanted this moment to sow a romance seed between Missandei and Ser Davos.

Well, Liam Cunningham said, “I’m not f***ing doing it.” The actor has a standard, and he was not going against his character trait just for a whimsical love triangle.

In the oral history book, Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon, Liam Cunningham said, “There’s a streak in Benioff that’s willful. He likes to stir the shit. When we first meet Daenerys, Benioff and [director Mark Mylod] wanted Davos to have a crush on Missandei. And I fought them.”

The actor also gave his reason why he did not want to do the romance. He said, “It’s the only thing I ever stood up to them on. The woman is a goddess, but with Davos’ history with Lyanna Mormont and Shireen, you can’t have him getting the hots for a young woman.”

Liam went on to say that he did not want his character to come off as a “perv” after years of building his image in fans’ eyes. I, for one, am glad that the moronic idea was shut down. We did not need a Ser Davos who was pining over young girls on top of the mess that was season 8.

The Creators of the Show Ruined even the Pilot of Game of Thrones

We all remember the pilot of Game of Thrones, where Daenerys was married off to Khal Drogo. The episode is even more notorious for having a brutal rape scene between the newly married couple.

Drogo goes in, and the sex between them is not consensual. Well, that scene was a change from seduction in the book turned into a brutal rape. Even George R. R. Martin was not consulted on the changes.

GRRM said, “Why did the wedding scene change from the consensual seduction scene to the brutal rape of Emilia Clarke? We never discussed it. It made it worse, not better.” This was one of many changes the creators of the show made from the books, and now it just all seems wrong.
