Why Does Five Never Change His Clothes on The Umbrella Academy?

Why Does Five Never Change His Clothes on The Umbrella Academy

Learn the reason Number Five wears the same uniform throughout the two seasons of The Umbrella Academy.

Not only does Number Five look the youngest in the Hargreeves family, but he is also the only one in The Umbrella Academy who still sports the conventional uniform of the team.

Created by Steve Blackman, the Netflix show is based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá‘s graphic novel series of the same name. Aidan Gallagher stars as Five, one of the kids with superpowers adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who creates a superhero squad called The Umbrella Academy.

Five often travels through time and space, but he never changes his appearance. Actually, Gallagher’s depiction of the character still features the same schoolboy uniform, and with a good reason.

Alongside his fellow adopted siblings – Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, and Ben – Five was raised at the Reginald Academy, where the group was trained to harness their exceptional skills.

Vanya was left on the sidelines, while the rest of the children transformed into a formidable band of superheroes. When messing with time travel, Five transported himself into the distant future, where the planet was left in ruins. He was then compelled to spend decades living whatever way he could until he found a way back to the present time.

Although Five lived 45 years trapped in the future, a misjudgment on his return to the present time frame caused him to be de-aged so that he again appeared like a 13-year-old boy.

As Five primed the others for the inevitable apocalypse, he quickly visited his old room in need of a change of clothing. Taking a quick glance inside the closet, Five noticed a full row of Umbrella Academy dresses. Five felt he had bigger fish to fry, so he just sighed and wore one.

The Handler usually commented on his schoolboy attire, especially his shorts, but the appearance never seemed to bother Five – which was presumably why he always wore the same clothes in The Umbrella Academy season 2.

Since Five tried to rescue his siblings from the devastation of the entire world at the conclusion of The Umbrella Academy season 1, the Hargreeves siblings ended up time traveling to Dallas in the 1960s.

Five arrived during another nuclear disaster in 1963. With the help of Hazel, Five leaped back in time before the tragic incident to receive the aid of his siblings. Five was still in schoolboy clothes, in addition to bowling shoes, which he later changed.

Once again, Five was too concerned about saving the planet to take note of his physical look, but there was another aspect impacting his outfit. Retaining Number Five’s uniform during both the seasons of The Umbrella Academy is, in fact, a strategic move.

Gallagher stays the youngest core member of the cast, but the difficulty of casting young characters is that teen actors will grow visibly older in merely a year. Taking into consideration the timeline of the series, Number Five is expected to look the same during the first two seasons.

Currently just 16 years old, Gallagher doesn’t look that different in the second season of The Umbrella Academy compared to season 1, but keeping him in a school uniform is a way to make the character appear younger even though the actor grows older.
