Wyatt Russell Admits He Expected His Character to be Disliked By Fans on 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier'

The Falcon and the Winter Solider star Wyatt Russell understands the fans’ dislike towards his character John Walker in the new Disney+ limited miniseries.

Wyatt Russell knows how much you despise John Walker. Merely a few months after Steve Rogers sort of retired as a superhero in Avengers: Endgame (2019), Russell’s character arrives as the new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), and the move has got fans outraged. That is precisely how the new character was crafted, so it’s fair to say it’s working wonders.

During the press tour for the latest Disney+ show, Wyatt told The Wrap:

That’s the goaI. I think people had a fun reaction.

Walker has been on the faces of both Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) while he owns Cap’s famous shield in the episodes we’ve witnessed him in.

Russell went on to say his character believes he merits the shield or, at the very least, is eager to prove to himself he’s worthy of it.

Russell continued,

There’s elements to him where he wants to be able to do it without the super soldier serum. Just be that good. He does have those ideas in his head of wanting people to like him, like his version of Captain America. It sort of gets rained on and causes him to have to rethink how things are going to be done.

In the opinion of the actor, Walker and Rogers, are quite similar in many respects. Walker simply has the benefit of living in the modern age, with public relations companies orchestrating his every step.

Wyatt Russell said,

The military man of World War II is just very different than the military man in today’s age. They just operate differently; the PR machine operates differently. There’s many more opinions about what military should be what their roles should be in the world.

Wyatt explains his character is a sort of a guy who’s been impressive at what he does. And he’s done it to help and defend, focused on some of the stuff Steve did, and he really wants to do the work, but people aren’t always willing to recognize him as the right person for the job.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier airs Fridays on Disney+.
