Wyatt Russell’s First Ever Audition was for Captain America: The First Avenger!

Wyatt Russell is getting mixed reactions from the fans for taking over the shield of Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But this not the first time he wanted to be the iconic star-spangled superhero. As fate would have it, Wyatt’s very first audition for a movie was for Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is a continuation of the story from the Avengers: Endgame. Captain America died and he wanted Sam to take his mantle but as we saw in the first episode of the Disney+ series he did not want to replace his own friend.

But the US government is not going to wait around, instead of honoring the legacy of Captain America, they decided to give the shield and the name to someone else. John Walker is now the new Captain and people are not comfortable with any of it (“how dare you stand where he stood” as Harry Potter would say).

Wyatt Russell was hired to play John Walker but his own history with the MCU has spanned over a decade now. He was one of the many actors who auditioned for the part of Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger and life has come full circle for Wyatt.

Audition for Captain America: The First Avenger – Wyatt Russell Reveals all

From Tom Cruise to Nicholas Cage, there have been few Hollywood stars who wanted to play superhero movies in the 90s and 00s. Whether DC or Marvel, they were interested but comic book movie scene was not back then what it is now today.

With MCU there are more and more actors wanting to be in on the superhero game as it means a steady and hefty paycheck over a long period of time. But Captain America in itself is an iconic hero so when the casting for the film began in the late 2000s and early 2010s there were a number of actors who threw their name in the hat.

And one of the people who got to audition for the character was Wyatt Russell who revealed the story behind what happened 10 years ago to GMA. As the host read out about his audition, the actor explained why he did the audition and what happened when he got a call from Marvel a decade later.

Wyatt said, “I think it’s a fun story, and I think honestly that first audition was more something to read to see if I was any good at acting or not. I don’t think I was ever really in competition for the role. It was crazy. And this time I had no idea even what it was. It was just like ‘Marvel wants you to read for something, go for it’ and I found out after I got the part, what it was. I didn’t even know what it was going in.”

It was funny seeing Wyatt in longbeard conversating with the crew of GMA. In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Episode 2, John Walker went back to his old high school for a televised introduction as Captain America and he was interviewed live on the high school football ground by Good Morning America.

John Walker is a mystery, we know who he becomes in the comics but MCU has a tendency to slide some things to the curb for the sake of continuity. So, it would be interesting to see if Walker transitions from Captain America to US Agent in the first season or us fans have to take a season worth of someone else standing in Steve Rogers‘ shoes.

But for Wyatt Russell, it all would have been so different had he been hired back in 2010 to play Steve in the 5th ever MCU movie. He was a little young back then but not young as Tom Holland was when he was tapped to play Spider-Man. Still, Steve Rogers, the tiny man with a large heart one, was a young man and maybe Wyatt would’ve bulked for the role. We know he can pull off a beard, so, one thing solved.
