Since the beginning of his career, Zack Snyder was a company man, someone who worked only for Warner Bros. But through years of fighting over his vision for the DC Universe, Zack left his old hunting grounds and found a new home in Netflix. And it appears things are going extremely smoothly as another Snyder project, namely the Star Wars inspired Rebel Moon, is getting the go ahead from the streaming company.

More recently Netflix and Zack Snyder worked together on the hit zombie-heist movie Army of the Dead. There are also signs that relationship between the director and the streaming platform are deepening as an anime prequel will be released soon and another live action prequel just released some cast and on-set photos. Add Rebel Moon into the mix and things appear to be calm on the Snyder-Netflix universe front.

After one successful project, two on the way and another anime featuring Norse gods in the works, Netflix is investing big on the Justice League director. But nothing gets bigger than investing on an original IP, with hopes of becoming a franchise, that is set in space and looking to create a sprawling world. That is exactly what Rebel Moon is, and Zack Snyder is excited about where it may all lead in the coming years.

Kurosawa Influence and Star Wars Inspired – Rebel Moon is Zack Snyder’s Sci-fi Baby

Most the sci-fi or adventure film directors, working now, trace back their love for the sprawling world of science fiction and fantasy came from Star Wars. The Skywalker saga inspired generations of creatives so it is no surprise when one of the most visionary sci-fi directors of our times, Zack Snyder, cites Star Wars as his early inspiration.

The director in the past mentioned his love for the “Galaxy Far Far Away,” while also claiming he had an idea for an original Star Wars movies. Zack mentioned he was also influenced by Akira Kurosawa, from a young age and his Star Wars film was going to be almost similar to a Samurai movie, but with lightsabers. It was an interesting that went nowhere, well, until Netflix got their hands on the director and now production is expected to begin soon with Army of the Dead and 300 scribes helping Snyder finish the script.

The former DC director revealed his influence for the new movie and also what we can expect, while talking with The Hollywood Reporter. He said, “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out. I’ve been working on this on the side for so long, it’s pretty far along.”

Rebel Moon follows the story of a peaceful colony at the edge of the Galaxy, which has its peace and quiet ruined by an evil regent named Balisarius. Fed up by the crime and atrocities, and tired of living under the thumb of an evil man, the people of colony send a mysterious woman on a mission to gather fighters from other planets so they can stand up against the regent.

Think 7 Samurai meets 13 Assassins with a little bit of Star Wars flavoring for good measure. Rebel Moon will start production in 2022 and it is sure to have a massive budget as Zack Snyder sees a set up for a whole new universe from scratch. The script is not yet finished but Snyder will produce, co-write and direct the film for Netflix.

No cast information is available yet, but expect to see a mixture of new and old faces when script and budgeting for Rebel Moon is done.
