Planes Trains and Automobiles Remake Has the Potential to Outdo the Original

by Bernd Mueller

Planes Trains and Automobiles is a John Hughes classic, and even in the company of cinematic greatness, the movie stands out as being one of the finest of the late great director. A high concept comedy-drama with two leading men in John Candy and Steve Martin at the top of their games, the 1987 classic still holds up to this day and is a constant holiday fixture.

Now, to add to the legacy of the illustrious movie, Will Smith and Kevin Hart are coming together to remake Planes Trains and Automobiles for a modern time. According to recent reports in Deadline, the two stars have signed on to play the leading roles in the film.

What is Planes Trains and Automobiles About?

The original movie by John Hughes was about a businessman trying to get home on time for Thanksgiving. But then his flight gets canceled, and he is forced to partner up with a lovable free-spirited person who gets on his nerves and makes the trip difficult for Steve Martin’s character.

John Candy and Steve Martin were perfect as the traveling partner, Steve’s character getting agitated all the time, and John’s character trying and failing to make the trip fun for Steve’s character. Those two were like water and oil in a barrel, and when all the agitation boils over, it also makes up for some hearty moments in the movie, which will still make you cry.

Planes Trains and Automobiles is one fine piece of cinema, and the heartfelt moments are where the holiday spirit shines through. Then there is the ending, which makes me giddy every time. There are a few movies, which can match the caliber of Planes Trains and Automobiles. This is why making a remake will be hard, but considering the people involved, I think it will be better than the original.

The obvious answer to the question is because of the lead cast of the movie. Kevin Hart and Will Smith are probably the most recognizable Hollywood stars outside of the Tom Cruise and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, worldwide. They are known for their comedic and emotional prowess and also their fan interactions on social media.

Putting those two actors together in a movie itself is going to produce massive fireworks, but adding a high concept road movie to the story is going to bring out the best in both of them. Will Smith and Kevin Hart can both play the roles of Steven Martin and John Candy. Will can be the uptight businessman, and Kevin can play the oddball sidekick who just wants to connect with people.

Those two together are going to be comedic gems, just like getting The Rock and Kevin together in Central Intelligence, and Jumanji resulted in massive box office numbers and high critical acclaim. Kevin Hart and Will Smith together is a slamdunk, and considering Aeysha Carr is getting her feature film debut; there is nothing stopping this film from reaching and soaring past the heights of the John Hughes classic.

I have been watching Planes Trains and Automobiles since I was a kid, and never had I thought of a remake. But if Hollywood is going to remake the beautiful holiday flick, then Will Smith and Kevin Hart would be my only two picks to carry on the legacy of Steve Martin and the late great John Candy.

There is no set production date for the movie right now, but the most likely time to release the film would be before Thanksgiving of 2021, barring any more shutdowns and a smooth filming process.
