Robert Kirkman Says Rick Grimes Movie will be Quite Different from 'The Walking Dead'

The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman claims the upcoming Rick Grimes movie will be pretty different from the AMC show.

The final season of The Walking Dead will begin airing later this year, bringing an end to the show’s run with season 11. Creator Robert Kirkman recently addressed the curtains coming down on this remarkable series.

It’s worth noting, this is not the culmination of The Walking Dead universe, as spinoff programs and a Rick Grimes film are planned after the final season closes.

Kirkman says,

I haven’t really thought about [ending The Walking Dead] to be honest but cause it’s still a ways away.

The final season started filming at the beginning of 2021 but is anticipated to last until the end of the year while it starts airing in summer 2021.

The showrunner adds,

At the same time, you know, we’re already talking about the Carol and Daryl show and there’s different ways that The Walking Dead will live on. So I guess concluding at Season 11 in some ways isn’t really a conclusion. So, I haven’t really thought about it but now you’re making me real sad!

Kirkman effectively ended The Walking Dead graphic novels a few years ago, giving viewers and the series creatives their first glimpse at how the saga he was writing would conclude. Now, he’s letting the closing of the TV show up to the forces that be, but he’s still involved in the discussions as they progress.

Kirkman says,

This is something that Angela Kang is working really hard on crafting. I have had some vague conversations with Scott [Gimple] and Angela about the direction and how things are going to wrap up, and what aspects of the comic they may or may not be using. But I think that it is, still somewhat in flux and I’m very excited to see what Angela does and I’m very confident that she’s gonna do something amazing because that’s what she does.

Regarding the film, which was previously intended as a trilogy after Andrew Lincoln‘s penultimate scene as Rick Grimes on the AMC show, Kirkman says, “I have no update,” which has been a recurring trope for this venture.

Still, having contributed to the script upon becoming vested soon after the movie’s first drafts were submitted, Kirkman seems enthusiastic for what the film will have to offer when it is released.

I think that the show is very much an ensemble story and this is very much Rick story. So, I think being able to focus more on Rick as a character and do more with him is really cool. I think it’s gonna be a very different kind of Walking Dead story, which is really exciting.

When doing stuff like this, you must make sure it makes complete sense as a film. This isn’t just an extension of what fans have come to expect from the show.

Kirkman insists the movie will be quite different, but it will still be the Rick Grimes that we’re familiar with. And he can’t wait for fans to watch it when the film comes out in 2022.
