The last time we saw Sherlock, he was renovating his damaged 221 Baker Street dwelling and listening to a number of unusual clients. That was four years ago on 15 January 2017 when the final shot of Sherlock series 4 was broadcasted. Nearly half a decade later Benedict Cumberbatch gives an update on a series 5 or a possible movie.

Sherlock on BBC was a reinvention of Sherlock Holmes based in modern times. With slick cinematography and visual style, the age-old story of the most famous detective in the world was refreshed for the smartphone age. The Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat created show was both a critical success and beloved among the fans.

Sherlock holds a rating of 9.1/10 in IMDb with over 800,000 votes, fans love the BBC series. While Series 4 had a polarized reaction from fans, there is no denying everyone wants to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman get back in the saddle and bring back Holmes and Watson.

Benedict Cumberbatch Answers Burning Question About Sherlock’s Future

Sherlock only has 12 episodes and 1 Christmas special but the series was started over a decade ago. With three episodes in each season, fans could never get enough of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes. And for intents and purposes, the show was responsible for people on the internet fan casting Benedict into each and every fan-favorite role under the sky.

While he may be known as Doctor Strange now, there was a time when Benedict Cumberbatch and Sherlock were synonymous with one another. From his chemistry with Watson actor Martin Freeman to his battle with a modern version of Professor Moriarty, everything about Sherlock was perfect and even after a lukewarm series 4, fans want more.

That sentiment is not lost on the actor who rose to mainstream and nerd-culture fame by playing the role. Benedict knows the love fans have for the show that is why he will never shut the door for a return. So, when Collider asked the same burning question about the possibility of Sherlock series 5, the actor pushed forth his thinking.

“I’m the worst person to ask because my slate’s pretty, pretty full at the moment, as is Martin and all the other key players involved. So, who knows? Maybe one day, if the script’s right. And I say ‘the script,’ maybe it could be a film rather than the series. Who knows? But anyway, not for now,” the actor teased.

Benedict Cumberbatch is a busy man, from award bates to fan-favorite characters, the actor is busy pleasing millions of fans on the large screen. While COVID has slowed down the whole thing a little, the actor is still scheduled to appear in a Doctor Strange movie and he is gearing for the release of The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.

Just look at his IMDb page and you will find multiple open projects so there is definitely no place in the immediate future for a Sherlock series 5 or a movie. But that does not mean he is saying no and closing the chapter altogether.

As he explained, “For me, the door is never fully closed. It’s closed at the moment, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be opened at some point in the future. But it’s definitely not something that’s on the agenda in the foreseeable future.” Fans can enjoy the 12 feature-length episodes for now, but don’t be surprised when the band gets back together in the next decade to do a feature film or another three-episode run.
